An absence of thinking during a time of fear

I never imagined that I would face the problem of an absence from my life through this stoppage of time. Life today is no longer like it was yesterday; instead, it is a strange occurrence of what it was yesterday and what it might be tomorrow. This feeling of a lack of freedom of movement is the most difficult thing I missed during the period of restrictions. I never imagined that I would ever stop practicing art, but I could feel my feelings of inspiration go away. My mind stopped thinking. This great shock paralyzed my mind from accepting reality and forced me to face my fears. I worked hard to change my lifestyle, to practice my daily activities, to return to my studio, and to do things that helped me overcome this experience of a stoppage of time. In my practice, I found myself exploring work and ideas from the early stages of my career where I worked in black and white, and when I was considering form, color, and abstract geometric relations (abstraction). It was this attempt to create a harmonious order with these abstract forms and elements that brought me peace. Abstraction from our daily reality and the return to an idea became a liberation from the laws of nature. The return to simplicity and form inspired this new body of work.

Tashkeel presents 'COVID Conversations', a group exhibition by UAE-based artists and designers that reflect upon the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. By focusing on creative acts that seek to explore, understand and process responses and reactions to the pandemic, the exhibition aims to examine the highs and the lows of the psychological impact, and creativity borne from the challenges of limitation, isolation and change, whether positive or negative.

The exhibition features visual artists of all disciplines, graphic designers, product designers and other creatives with finished works, experimental outcomes and research in a range of mediums realised during the period since March 2020, when restrictions on movement and engagement were first introduced.

‘COVID Conversations’ will be accompanied by a programme of talks, tours and workshops during the exhibition period, which will be delivered both online and at Tashkeel (Nad Al Sheba) subject to social distancing measures.
